According to the NCS, the recent recruitment drive for 2024/2025 attracted an overwhelming 573,519 applications, far surpassing the vacancies sanctioned by the Federal Government. Wale Edun, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, informed attendees at the 61st quarterly board meeting of the NCS in Abuja that the government intends to recruit 3,927 customs officers.

Abdullahi Maiwada, the National Public Relations Officer of the NCS, provided a breakdown of the applications, which included candidates with various qualifications such as university degrees, HNDs, and secondary school certificates. He clarified that the NCS comprises two main categories of officers: support staff, who hold professional roles, and general duty officers. The NCS stressed its commitment to a transparent and merit-based recruitment process to ensure that only the most qualified individuals are chosen.

Application Breakdown:

• Superintendent Cadre (General Duty): 249,218 applications
• Superintendent Cadre (Support Staff): 27,722 candidates with HNDs and university degrees
• Inspector Cadre (General Duty): 115,634 applications
• Inspector Cadre (Support Staff): 12,952 applications
• Customs Assistants (General Duty): 153,593 applications (for secondary school certificate holders with five credits, including Maths and English)
• Customs Assistants (Support Staff): 14,400 applications (for those without Maths and English)

The substantial number of applications underscores the high unemployment rates in Nigeria and the significant interest in public sector employment. As reported by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the country’s labor force comprises 88.94 million individuals, with 84.15 million employed, resulting in an unemployment rate of 5.39%. Notably, a large majority of employed Nigerians (74.4%) work in the private sector, while 25.6% are in the public sector.

Research indicates that Nigerian youth have a strong preference for public sector careers, citing job security and economic advantages such as pensions and gratuities as key factors. Additionally, perceptions surrounding public sector jobs, dissatisfaction with private sector roles, social recognition, and altruistic motivations further influence this preference.
