“That you Hope Uzodimma of APC having satisfied the law is hereby returned elected,” Fashina declared.

Uzodimma initially assumed the position of Imo State governor in January 2020, following the Supreme Court’s annulment of the election of Emeka Ihedioha of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This circumstance garnered him additional political adversaries in a state grappling with security challenges such as “unknown gunmen,” abductions, and recurring Monday sit-at-home actions by pro-secessionist groups.

At 64 years old, Uzodimma sought reelection in the recent Saturday poll and secured victories across all 27 local government areas in the state. He triumphed over opponents like PDP’s Samuel Anyanwu, Labour Party’s (LP) Nneji Achonu, Jack Ogunewe of the Action Alliance (AA), and 14 others.

The APC candidate garnered 540,308 votes, surpassing his closest competitors, PDP’s Anyanwu with 71,503 votes and LP’s Achonu with 64,081 votes.

Uzodimma’s win signifies another beating for Joe Ajaero, the president of the Nigeria Labour Congress, whom the Governor accuses of advancing the Labour Party’s agenda in Imo State.

“Joe Ajaero is pursuing his personal interest,” the governor said on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Thursday.

“He (Ajaero) has said times with number that he is a member of Labour Party (LP). He has a candidate in the election of Imo State. So, he is driving whatever programme that will give advantage to Labour Party in Imo State.”

Last Wednesday in Owerri, Ajaero faced an attack just ahead of a scheduled protest in the state aimed at urging the state government to address the demands of the workers. The NLC asserted that the Uzodimma government orchestrated the assault on Ajaero, but the government has refuted these allegations.
