How Nigeria Missed its Path to Greatness – Dr. Yemi Farounbi Calls for a Return to Cultural Diversity
Dr. Yemi Farounbi, Nigeria’s former Ambassador to The Philippines, emphasized the nation’s lost potential due to its failure to embrace the diverse strengths of its ethnic groups. Drawing on the insights of Nnamdi Azikiwe, a central figure in Nigeria’s independence movement, Dr. Farounbi shed light on how Nigeria could have thrived had it celebrated its cultural richness rather than striving for uniformity.
He argued that Nigeria’s push to make everyone “think alike” and “sleep in the same direction” has undermined creativity, innovation, and progress across its many ethnic communities. According to Farounbi, this desire for uniformity has led to complacency, weakening the self-sufficiency that once defined groups like the Igbo, Fulani, and Yoruba.
Farounbi expressed particular concern about Nigeria’s current reliance on external aid for basic needs, despite being a country rich in agricultural resources. “It’s ironic,” he remarked, “that a nation so blessed with fertile land and a strong farming history now has citizens queuing for essential food items such as rice, beans, and garri.”
The former ambassador stressed that each ethnic group in Nigeria has unique strengths and contributions that, if harnessed properly, could have propelled the country to greater heights. “Every ethnic unit has something special to offer,” he said. “If we had embraced this diversity, Nigeria would be a different place today. Instead, we have equalized everyone into beggars.”
Dr. Farounbi’s remarks serve as a powerful call for Nigeria to return to its roots, harness the potential of its people, and redefine itself as a nation that thrives on diversity, not uniformity.
