How Terrorists Smuggled A Gun Truck From Libya Into Zamfara
The Federal Government is set to bring five individuals suspected of ties to notorious terrorist leader Bello Turji before the Federal High Court in Abuja today (Monday)…READ MORE…
In the charges, labeled FHC/ABJ/CR/633/2024 and submitted to Justice Emeka Nwite, the government alleges that the suspects imported a military gun truck valued at N28.5 million from Libya.
The suspects, apprehended by Nigerian security forces, will be presented by the Attorney-General of the Federation’s office before Justice Nwite, who is currently serving as a vacation judge.
Although their arraignment was initially scheduled for Friday, it was postponed due to the absence of legal representation. AGF attorney David Kaswe requested a brief adjournment to allow the suspects to secure counsel of their choice, and Justice Nwite has now scheduled the arraignment for Monday.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the AGF’s office has filed 11 counts against eight defendants, three of whom are currently at large.
In the charge filed on December 16, Musa Kamarawa; Abubakar Hashimu, also known as Doctor; Bashir Abdullahi; Samuel Chinedu; and Lucky Chukwuma are named as the first to fifth defendants. The sixth to eighth defendants—Bello Turji, Aminu Muhammad, and Sani Lawal—are among those at large.
They are accused of providing various kinds of material support to terrorist groups led by Turji, Kachalla Halilu, Danbokolo, Lawali, Atarwatse, Buderi, and others. This support allegedly included supplying illegal drugs such as penta injections and cannabis, as well as food items, military and police uniforms, camouflage, boots, caps, and construction materials.
In addition, they are charged with delivering bags of cement, roofing zinc, bags of nails, and iron rods to terrorist camps in the forests of Zamfara, Sokoto, and Kaduna States.
These offenses are said to violate Section 17 of the Terrorism (Prevention) (Amendment) Act 2013 and are punishable under the same section of the law.
In the fourth count, Kamarawa, along with Muhammad and Lawal (who are both at large), is accused of facilitating acts of terrorism by acquiring a military gun truck from Libya and supplying it to terrorist Kachalla Halilu for approximately N28.5 million in 2021 in Sokoto State.
They are alleged to have partially paid for the vehicle in cash and partly through electronic means, knowing or having reason to believe that it would be used by Kachalla Halilu, a known terrorist, to carry out terrorist activities.
As stated in the count, this constitutes an offense under Section 18(a) of the Terrorism (Prevention) (Amendment) Act 2013, also carrying penalties under the same section.
In count five, Kamarawa, Hashimu (Doctor), and Abdullahi are accused of assisting in terrorist activities in 2018 in Sokoto State by providing medical care, medication, and shelter to treat gunshot wounds sustained by Bello Turji after he led an attack on Tungar Kolo Village in Zamfara State.
This allegation is said to contravene Section 8(1)(b) of the Terrorism (Prevention) (Amendment) Act 2013, with similar penalties applicable.
