ICPC Brings Charges Against Ex-ASCSN Leader For Suspected N72m Fraud”

The accusations against Audu were formally presented in court by the ICPC, signaling a significant development in the ongoing investigation into financial impropriety within the civil service.

Audu, who previously held a prominent position within the office of the Accountant General of the Federation, was suspended by the Federal Government amid suspicions of corruption. Subsequently, he was also expelled from his role as President of ASCSN due to alleged involvement in anti-union activities.

Appearing before Yusuf Halilu, a judge of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Maitama, Abuja, Audu denied the five-count charge leveled against him. His plea of not guilty prompted a request from the ICPC’s legal representative, Osuobeni Akponimisingha, for the trial to commence at the earliest convenience.

During the proceedings, Audu’s defense counsel, Babatunde Adewusi, urged the court to grant bail to his client. This plea was not opposed by the prosecution, represented by Mr. Akponimisingha, who emphasized the importance of ensuring the defendant’s presence throughout the trial process.

In a demonstration of fairness and adherence to legal procedures, Judge Yusuf Halilu acknowledged Audu’s constitutional right to bail, emphasizing the presumption of innocence until proven guilty. He granted Audu bail on the condition that he provides two sureties who must be directors in the federal civil service, with proof of their employment and promotion.

The charges against Audu stem from allegations of misappropriation of funds, including the diversion of N69 million intended for the purchase of a sport utility vehicle for the ASCSN President’s office, as well as the purported diversion of N3 million allocated for the union’s election.

As the legal process unfolds, Audu’s case serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability and transparency within the civil service. It underscores the government’s commitment to rooting out corruption and ensuring that public funds are utilized for their intended purposes, rather than being siphoned off for personal gain.
