Ambarla, hailing from Hyderabad, carried out the attack after threatening Biju with murder if she declined his marriage proposal. Upon her refusal, stating her unwillingness to adhere to his demands, Ambarla violently assaulted her, leaving her critically injured. Despite the severity of the attack, Biju survived but spent a month in the hospital recovering from her injuries.
At his sentencing at the Old Bailey on Thursday, April 25, 2024, Ambarla pleaded guilty to attempted murder and possession of a knife in a public place. The court heard that moments before the assault, Ambarla had searched online for methods of killing with a knife, indicating premeditation.
In addition to the prison term, Ambarla was issued a lifetime restraining order prohibiting any contact with the victim.
The court was informed that the 2022 attack followed years of manipulation, physical, and mental abuse by Ambarla towards Biju. The abusive relationship began in 2017 during their time at a Hyderabad college and continued after their move to the UK in pursuit of higher education.
Despite their breakup in 2019, Ambarla persisted in harassing Biju, resorting to threats and blackmail to coerce her into marriage. His behavior escalated even further after their relocation to the UK, with Ambarla frequently contacting Biju’s workplace and making threatening visits.
The attack occurred during one such visit to the restaurant where Biju worked. After refusing his marriage proposal once again, Ambarla resorted to violence, stabbing her multiple times. He later claimed to the police that he had snapped upon overhearing Biju discussing plans to celebrate their breakup.
The case underscores the grave consequences of domestic abuse and the importance of addressing warning signs to prevent such tragedies.
