Over the past six months of warfare following Hamas’s October 7 assaults, Palestinians in Gaza observed Eid al-Fitr prayers amidst the backdrop of destruction. In east Jerusalem, annexed by Israel, tens of thousands gathered at the Al-Aqsa mosque compound for morning prayers.

Rawan Abd, a nurse at the site, described this Eid as the “saddest ever,” noting a prevailing sense of mourning among attendees. The Al-Aqsa mosque, revered by both Muslims and Jews, became a symbol of solace rather than celebration this year.

Meanwhile, Israeli military airstrikes continued in Gaza following Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s vow to press on with the offensive against Hamas and secure the release of hostages. Netanyahu reiterated Israel’s resolve to target Rafah, a city in southern Gaza, despite being a refuge for many displaced Palestinians.

Against this backdrop, diplomatic efforts for peace and hostage negotiations are underway in Cairo, with involvement from the US, Egypt, and Qatar.

However, President Biden expressed strong disapproval of Netanyahu’s aggressive tactics, highlighting the extensive civilian casualties and humanitarian crisis caused by the prolonged conflict.

In an interview with Spanish-language TV network Univision, Biden urged Netanyahu to call for a ceasefire and allow unhindered access to food and medicine for the people of Gaza.

The conflict initially erupted with Hamas’s October 7 attack against Israel, resulting in significant loss of life and displacement on both sides. The ensuing retaliatory offensive by Israel has further exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, drawing condemnation from international humanitarian organizations.

Despite recent aid deliveries, Gaza continues to face severe shortages of essential goods, leading to famine-like conditions, according to humanitarian groups.

The United States has resumed funding to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, underscoring the urgency of addressing the dire humanitarian situation in the region.
