The investigation was initiated following a report from Nkwuda Francis on January 21, 2024, detailing the abduction of two young children by an individual posing as a youth corps member named Mercy Francis. It was later discovered that the suspect’s real name was Ngozi Blessing Abia.

Thanks to the efforts of the police gender unit, the suspect was traced to Oba, Anambra State, where the children, aged three and seven, were rescued and reunited with their relieved family in Nwezenyi Igbeagu, Izzi LGA, Ebonyi State.

The operation also uncovered the suspect’s involvement in additional abductions, including three children from Ohaozara LGA, Ebonyi State, and one from Lagos, all of whom were found in a Benin City orphanage. The proprietor of the orphanage is currently assisting the police in their investigation.

Another report from Chinasa Uwezoke from Lagos revealed that Abia deceitfully took her three-year-old son under the guise of a market visit.

The police statement elaborated on Abia’s modus operandi, which involved renting an apartment, gaining the trust of her neighbors, and subsequently kidnapping their children for financial gain.

In response to these revelations, the Ebonyi State Police Command urged property owners and caretakers to conduct thorough background checks on prospective tenants. Additionally, parents were encouraged to educate their children about safety measures when interacting with strangers.
