In a statement released on Friday evening, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Joshua Ukandu, officially confirmed the harrowing event.
The statement outlined, “Today, 08/03/2024, at approximately 05:00 am, officers of the Command stationed at hilltop stop and search/pin-down point along Nwofe Road, on the outskirts of Abakaliki, were ambushed by armed hoodlums believed to be IPOB/ESN members, who opened fire indiscriminately at the officers.”
Engaged in a fierce exchange of gunfire, the officers bravely confronted the attackers. As a result, four officers tragically lost their lives, and two civilians were caught in the crossfire and also perished.
