After 12 Years, Uber Pulls Out Of Nigeria — Full Details Emerge

Global ride-hailing company Uber has announced the shutdown of its operations in Nigeria, bringing its 12-year presence in the country to an end.

According to reports, the company said its services in Nigeria would cease from September 2, 2026, following a comprehensive review of its business operations.

Uber announced the decision in a statement issued on Wednesday, describing the move as a difficult decision after reviewing its activities in the Nigerian market.

“We are writing to share some difficult news. After a thorough review of our business, we have made the tough decision to wind down our operations in Nigeria, effective 2 September 2026,” the company said.

Uber entered the Nigerian market in 2014 with the launch of its service in Lagos, becoming one of the company’s early destinations on the African continent. Its platform connected passengers with independent drivers through a mobile application.

Reflecting on its years of operation, the company expressed appreciation to Nigerians who used its platform for their transportation needs.

Uber said it had been privileged to become part of the daily lives of customers since launching in Lagos, providing a platform that connected users with independent transportation providers.

The company noted that customers had relied on its service for various journeys, including commuting to work, visiting relatives and friends, and moving around the city.

The ride-hailing giant also acknowledged that the sudden termination of its services could disrupt the routines of customers who regularly depended on the platform.

“We know this may cause disruption to your routine, and we sincerely apologise for the inconvenience,” Uber said.

Despite ending its ride-hailing operations in Nigeria, the company said customers would retain access to its support services for a limited period.

According to the company, its help centre will remain operational until September 23, 2026, to address outstanding account-related complaints and enquiries.

Uber thanked Nigerians for welcoming the company into their cities and for using its platform throughout its 12-year presence in the country.
