The Nigerian naira recorded a slight gain against the United States dollar at the official foreign exchange market on Friday.

According to Ireporter Online, data released by the Central Bank of Nigeria showed that the naira traded at ₦1,326.5192 to one dollar at the close of trading.

The latest exchange rate represents an improvement from the ₦1,328.2154 recorded against the dollar on Thursday, indicating a marginal strengthening of the local currency at the official market.

At the parallel market, commonly referred to as the black market, the naira reportedly closed at ₦1,390 to the dollar.

However, exchange rates offered by commercial banks, Bureau de Change operators and other authorised foreign exchange dealers may differ from the official reference rate due to transaction margins and prevailing market conditions.

The difference in rates across the various segments of the foreign exchange market continues to reflect changes in dollar demand and supply.

Market observers are expected to continue monitoring foreign exchange inflows, demand for the dollar and policy decisions by the Central Bank of Nigeria in the coming weeks.

The performance of the naira through the rest of the month is likely to depend largely on the availability of foreign currency and developments within Nigeria’s foreign exchange market.
