In a significant operation, the Rapid Response Squad of Abia State Police Command successfully rescued sixteen pregnant women and eight children from a suspected baby factory on March 7, 2024. Addressing the media at the Police headquarters in Umuahia, ASP Maureen Chinaka, the Public Relations Officer of Abia State Police Command, disclosed that the rescued women, along with their children, were paraded alongside two suspects. The arrested suspects were identified as Onyinyechi Okoro from Ihechiowa and Ekene Okezie from Arondizuogu, Imo State.

ASP Chinaka emphasized that the ongoing discreet investigation aims to uncover the full extent of the illegal operations. The Command urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, reaffirming its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all law-abiding citizens in the state.

During the parade, Ekene Okezie claimed innocence, asserting that he was merely a lawful tenant in the building housing the baby factory. Conversely, Onyinyechi Okoro admitted her involvement, stating that she was employed by another male suspect to care for the pregnant women and their babies, expressing remorse for her actions.

Commending the efforts of security agencies, particularly the Abia State Police Command, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Governor Alex Otti, emphasized the government’s zero-tolerance stance on the exploitation of young girls and children. He assured that all apprehended suspects would face justice.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to eradicating such crimes, Mrs. Ngozi Felix, Abia State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, emphasized the importance of counseling for the rescued girls and urged parents to prioritize their children’s upbringing. She further assured that the girls and their babies would receive rehabilitation and support for reintegration into their families and communities.
