This strategic decision, unveiled during a presentation at the Lagos Business School Breakfast Club, signifies a shift towards utilizing public domestic debt instruments to manage and service existing financial liabilities. Notably, in 2023, the government had procured N2.94 trillion from the CBN, demonstrating a proactive stance towards financial management.
Investor Attraction and Economic Stability The government’s financial instruments, particularly Nigerian Treasury Bills (NTBs) and Bonds, have witnessed a surge in demand from investors, propelled by the CBN’s enticing interest rates and robust defense of the naira. Minister Edun underscored the substantial interest payout anticipated, with the CBN incurring approximately N1.01 trillion in interest payments.
The first quarter of 2024 witnessed a remarkable total subscription for government securities amounting to N21.17 trillion, signaling a resurgence in investor confidence and heightened demand for Nigerian financial assets.
Fiscal Management and External Debt Servicing The Ways and Means provision, a financial mechanism permitting short-term funding from the CBN, was utilized significantly, with the National Assembly approving N22.7 trillion in such advances. This fiscal strategy forms part of Nigeria’s broader approach to efficiently manage cash shortfalls and external debt obligations.
The escalation in external debt servicing, as reported by the Debt Management Office, underscores the government’s unwavering commitment to fulfilling its international financial obligations.
