The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, sparked widespread anger and violent demonstrations, exacerbating tensions within the community.
Eyewitnesses recounted that NSCDC officers, in pursuit of suspected hoodlums armed with dangerous weapons, fired shots indiscriminately, inadvertently striking the victim amidst the chaos. The tragic death of the woman triggered immediate public outcry, leading to spontaneous protests.
According to reports from Channels TV, local residents, overwhelmed by grief and fury, expressed their dismay by setting an NSCDC vehicle ablaze, signaling deep-seated frustration with the security forces’ actions.
Confirming the incident, ASP Yazid Abubakar, spokesperson for the Nigerian Police in Zamfara State, disclosed the arrest of two NSCDC personnel involved in the tragic event. He assured that the police are conducting a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
This distressing event underscores the fragile relationship between security forces and civilians in conflict-ridden areas, underscoring the urgent need for accountability and restraint in law enforcement operations.
As the investigation progresses, residents of Gusau are demanding justice and preventive measures to avert similar incidents in the future.
In response to the allegations, NSCDC spokesperson in Zamfara State, Ikor Oche, refuted claims that their personnel were responsible for the shooting. He asserted that NSCDC officers were stationed at their post, monitoring the movements of Muslim faithful observing Eid prayers when they heard gunshots from a nearby location. Upon investigating, they discovered a woman with gunshot wounds.
Oche clarified that NSCDC personnel did not engage in any shooting but were attacked by a mob, prompting them to flee for safety, leaving their vehicle behind, which was subsequently set ablaze. He affirmed that NSCDC has launched an internal investigation to ascertain the cause of the incident.
Meanwhile, Nigerian Police have intervened to disperse the mob, restore order, and investigate the vandalism of the burnt NSCDC vehicle.
