2027: SDP Candidate Adebayo Vows To Put Solar Panels On Every Nigerian Roof

The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo, has promised to significantly expand access to electricity through rooftop solar power if elected president in the 2027 general election.

According to Ireporter Online, Adebayo said he would install between 11 and 15 kilowatts of solar power on every Nigerian roof within 11 months of assuming office.

The SDP candidate made the pledge on Tuesday while appearing on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme, where he outlined his proposed approach to addressing Nigeria’s electricity challenges.

Adebayo argued that the country should reduce its reliance on large-scale grid expansion, particularly in rural communities, and instead embrace decentralised energy solutions such as rooftop solar systems.

He also proposed the local production of solar panels, alongside the training of Nigerians to install, operate and maintain the systems.

Adebayo recalled that he had made a similar proposal during the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2001, when he recommended that Nigeria establish a solar-panel manufacturing plant through a partnership with countries such as China or India.

“In 2001, the Obasanjo administration invited me, and I advised them to enter into an agreement with China or India, set up a factory to make solar panels, and train people to install them,” he said.

The SDP candidate also questioned the continued reliance on conventional power infrastructure for rural electrification, arguing that rooftop solar could provide a more practical alternative in many communities.

He further suggested that funding for the proposed solar initiative could be sourced from resources available to local governments.

“Every Local Government Area has money that they steal every month to capitalize on this,” Adebayo said.

According to him, developing Nigeria’s solar-energy industry would not only reduce dependence on the national grid but also create employment opportunities through local manufacturing, installation and maintenance.

Adebayo presented the proposal as part of his broader plan to improve electricity supply and encourage the development of a more decentralised and locally driven power sector if elected in 2027.
