Deeply Shameful” — Atiku Condemns Attack On Peter Obi’s Convoy In Benue

African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has condemned the reported attack on the convoy of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi during his visit to Benue State.

According to Ireporter Online, Atiku described the incident as unacceptable, shameful and undemocratic, while calling on the relevant authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Atiku made his position known in a statement issued on Wednesday by his campaign spokesperson, Kenneth Okonkwo.

The former Vice President urged the government and security agencies to identify those responsible and ensure that they are held accountable.

“Atiku Abubakar strongly condemns the violent attack on Peter Obi, who was brutally prevented from reaching bereaved families of Yelwata, Benue State, to offer his condolences over the persistent terrorist attacks on them,” the statement said.

According to the statement, Atiku described the incident as “unacceptable, anti-democratic, and deeply shameful” and called for urgent action by the authorities.

He also stressed the need to guarantee the safety and freedom of political leaders to move around the country and carry out their activities without intimidation.

The incident reportedly occurred on Tuesday after Obi and members of his entourage arrived in Benue State as part of a planned visit to Yelwata to sympathise with families affected by attacks in the area.

Obi’s media aide, Esther Umoh, had earlier alleged that suspected thugs barricaded Boko Road near the Nigerian Air Force Base, preventing the convoy from proceeding.

Umoh raised the alarm in a post on X and shared a video purportedly showing the road obstruction.

The circumstances surrounding the reported blockade have continued to generate reactions, with calls for authorities to investigate the incident and determine those responsible.
