The Defence Headquarters has announced a change in the designation of January 15, stating that the date will no longer be observed solely as Armed Forces Remembrance Day but will now be known as Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day.

According to Ireporter Online, the announcement was contained in a statement released on Thursday by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba. The updated name is intended to broaden the significance of the annual observance by recognising both active members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and those who lost their lives in the line of duty.

The Federal Government has continued to set aside January 15 each year as a day to acknowledge the courage, commitment and sacrifices of military personnel who safeguard the nation’s territorial integrity and protect lives and property across the country.

The Defence Headquarters explained that the new title reflects the dual purpose of the occasion, combining the celebration of gallant service members currently in uniform with solemn remembrance of fallen heroes who paid the ultimate price in defence of the nation.

Traditionally, activities marking the event span an entire week and culminate in a grand parade and wreath-laying ceremony held on January 15.

The military authorities have urged media organisations and the general public to adopt and consistently use the updated name in all future references and reports. The Armed Forces also expressed appreciation to the media for its continued support in addressing security challenges nationwide and reaffirmed its commitment to sustained collaboration in the interest of national security.
