The commendation came during separate courtesy visits by Prof. Wushishi and the management team of NECO to the residences of the elder statesmen in Minna.
According to a statement by NECO’s Acting Director of Information and Digital Communication, Azeez Sani, the former leaders praised the importance of NECO to Nigeria’s educational development and urged for continued support for the institution.
Prof. Wushishi, while briefing Gen. Babangida, highlighted the challenges inherited from previous administrations, including a lack of basic facilities, inadequate office accommodation, and low staff morale. However, he noted that significant progress had been made in addressing these challenges through prudent resource management and impactful reforms.
Expressing his satisfaction with the reforms, Gen. Babangida stated, “I am quite impressed with what you have been able to achieve since your assumption of office. NECO is an important institution which has a great role to play in the educational development of Nigeria, I therefore urge you and your management not to relent in your efforts in sustaining this very important government institution”.
Similarly, Gen. Abdulsalami commended Prof. Wushishi for his ability to overcome the challenges inherited upon assuming office, remarking, “I don’t know whether to commiserate with you or to commend you in view of the pathetic picture you have presented when you assumed Office. I will however commend you for your ability to overcome these challenges, and for putting NECO in its rightful place among the comity of examination bodies in the world”.
Reflecting on the establishment of NECO during his administration, Gen. Abdulsalami expressed happiness at its evolution into a formidable examination body despite initial hurdles.
The statements from the former leaders underscore the significance of NECO in Nigeria’s educational landscape and the importance of sustained efforts towards its improvement and advancement.
