Following the weekly executive meeting, Dr. Kingsley Emu, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), briefed journalists on the decision, revealing that the ban would take immediate effect, with full enforcement commencing on June 1st.
The affected areas include Oshimili South and North, Sapele, Ika, and Uvwie local government areas. Emu emphasized that the ban aims to address security challenges and ensure the safety of residents, citing incidents of crime, including rape, and vandalism of public infrastructure by Okada riders.
He warned that violators of the ban would face severe consequences, including arrest, confiscation and destruction of motorcycles, and appearance before mobile courts. The government has deployed security personnel to enforce compliance with the ban.
Emu clarified that the ban was not targeted at victimizing specific tribes or fostering division but rather aimed at safeguarding life and property. He noted that the state’s transport unions are unaffected by the ban.
Furthermore, Emu highlighted efforts by local government areas such as Oshimili South and North to address related issues, such as banning scrap metal scavengers to curb vandalism.
The decision underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring the security and well-being of residents across Delta State.
