This new process allows Nigerians in the diaspora to renew their passports online, eliminating the need to visit physical offices. Comptroller-General of the NIS, Kemi Nandap, made this announcement during a meeting with Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), in Abuja.

Nandap emphasized that the system will be available only for passport renewals, not for first-time applicants or minors. The renewal process can be initiated up to one year before a passport expires, offering convenience for Nigerians living abroad.

Additionally, Nandap confirmed the opening of a new passport processing facility in New York to address backlogs, with plans for further expansion in the U.S. and other countries.

Dabiri-Erewa welcomed the initiative, calling it a significant move toward improving passport services for Nigerians overseas. NiDCOM will continue to monitor and support the successful implementation of the program.

The contactless passport system has already been implemented in Canada, where it has received positive feedback from the Nigerian community.
