Kogi Government Lambasts EFCC, Calls For End To Yahaya Bello Witch-Hunt
The Kogi State Government has vehemently criticized the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), accusing it of unfairly targeting the immediate past governor, Yahaya Bello. In a statement released on Friday by the state Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, the government alleged that the EFCC’s actions were instigated by certain political actors aligned with the Presidency, aiming to tarnish Bello’s reputation……READ ALSO Just In: Kogi Government Issues Warning To Principals Over Possible Sabotage In Students’ WAEC Fees Payment
Fanwo asserted that there were no missing funds in the state’s coffers and urged the EFCC to refrain from implicating Kogi State in its ongoing persecution. He argued that the anti-graft agency was attempting to smear the former governor’s name and sensationalize the situation, thereby fueling a media campaign against Bello and other government officials.
The commissioner called on President Bola Tinubu to initiate a special investigation into the situation in Kogi State before the EFCC was further exploited as a tool by political interests. Fanwo emphasized that grievances against individuals should not be allowed to besmirch the reputation of the entire state.
Highlighting the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability since 2016, Fanwo emphasized Kogi’s adherence to anti-corruption principles and its record of receiving accolades from national and international bodies, including the World Bank.
The statement denounced the EFCC’s alleged haste to target the former governor, describing it as politically motivated and detrimental to the principles of justice and fairness. Fanwo emphasized the government’s support for the federal anti-corruption campaign but insisted that such efforts must be conducted with integrity and adherence to the rule of law.
In conclusion, the statement reaffirmed the government’s dedication to upholding Kogi’s integrity and pledged to defend its reputation against unjust attacks. Fanwo reiterated the administration’s commitment to transparent governance and urged for a cessation of politically motivated witch-hunts.
