Mr. Wemi Jones, the Commissioner for Education Science and Technology, delivered the warning during the verification process for government-sponsored 2024 WAEC candidates at Bishop Delisles College, Lokoja, on Thursday.

Governor Yahaya Bello had previously approved the disbursement of N497 million in November 2023 for the payment of WAEC fees for students in the state’s public schools.

Jones emphasized the crucial role of principals and school heads in the successful implementation of the government’s payment program for internal and external examinations.

Jones expressed concern over the non-submission of accurate student figures by some principals, characterizing it as a disservice to the state and a threat to the students’ and the state’s future.

He highlighted Governor Yahaya Bello’s commitment to ensuring the Ministry of Education’s active role by initiating WAEC fee payments for students despite political challenges in 2023.

While reiterating the government’s plan to cover not only WAEC fees but also JAMB and other internal examination fees, Jones lamented the lack of sincerity among some principals, hindering the progress of the WAEC payment initiative.

He emphasized the importance of obtaining accurate student figures for effective planning and urged principals to cooperate by providing truthful and original registers.

The commissioner revealed that 15,033 students were identified to benefit from the WAEC fee payment program in 2024, urging principals to align with the government’s efforts and prioritize the success of the initiative.

The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Alhaji Yakubu Musa, also called on principals to act responsibly and ensure the proper execution of the program.
