Lady Returns ₦800k Sent by Mistake, Man Reacts: “Why Transfer It Back?
A woman has recounted an unusual encounter involving her former neighbour after he reportedly transferred ₦800,000 into her bank account by mistake.
According to the woman, her former neighbour contacted her last week to inform her that the money had been sent to her account erroneously.
She said she checked her account, confirmed that the ₦800,000 had indeed been received and decided to return the money. However, the man allegedly provided a different bank account and asked her to transfer the funds there.
Rather than sending the money to the newly provided account, the woman said she returned the full ₦800,000 to the account from which the funds had originally been transferred.
She reportedly included the transaction description, “Money mistakenly received,” while making the refund.
According to her account, the former neighbour called shortly after noticing that she had returned the money to the original account.
She quoted him as saying, “Why would you transfer the money back to my Opay? I gave you an account to send the money to. I can’t withdraw money from that Opay.”
The woman said she explained that she could not send the money to an account different from the one that originally transferred the funds.
“Bros, I didn’t receive the money from the account you sent me,” she reportedly replied.
She said the man became angry during the conversation, ended the call and subsequently blocked her on WhatsApp before she could send him the transfer receipt.
The situation reportedly took another unexpected turn days later when the woman disclosed that her former neighbour had been arrested by the police.
However, she did not reveal the reason for his arrest or establish any connection between the arrest and the ₦800,000 transaction.
The incident has since highlighted the need for caution when handling unexpected bank transfers, particularly where a sender asks that the money be returned to a different account from the one that initially transferred it.
