Lagos Airport Clash: Customs Promote Unity With FAAN Amid Dispute
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has reiterated its dedication to fostering collaboration with other government agencies to fulfill its constitutional mandate and contribute to national economic growth.
NCS spokesperson, Abdullahi Maiwada, made this statement on Saturday in Abuja, addressing a recent altercation between Customs officials and personnel from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
The dispute, which occurred on Thursday at the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO) shed at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, reportedly stemmed from a miscommunication regarding equipment movement and seating arrangements.
Maiwada emphasized that the NCS remains committed to working alongside relevant stakeholders for the nation’s benefit. He highlighted the service’s adherence to the World Customs Organisation’s (WCO) Safe Framework of Standards, which promotes cooperation between Customs agencies, other government bodies, and businesses. This collaborative approach, he noted, is crucial for efficient trade facilitation, regulatory compliance, and economic advancement.
He further clarified that the NAHCO and Skyway Aviation Handling Company (SAHCO) Import and Export Warehouses are licensed Customs Bonded Warehouses operating under the NCS Act of 2023. According to Section 127 of the Act, these facilities fall under the direct control of the Customs Service.
Under the leadership of Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi, Maiwada affirmed, the NCS remains dedicated to enhancing inter-agency cooperation and ensuring smooth operational procedures to prevent future disputes.
“The NCS reaffirms its mandate to facilitate trade, enforce regulations, and safeguard national security,” he added, urging stakeholders to prioritize collaboration, adhere to due process, and uphold mutual respect to foster economic growth.
