Lagos Government Plans Demolition Of 100 Shanties Under Major Bridge

Wahab explained that the removal of these shanties is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to reclaim all ungoverned spaces within Lagos. Residents occupying the shanties were issued a 48-hour removal notice, which expired on Sunday, and were urged to vacate voluntarily to avoid any confrontation with authorities.

Expressing concerns over the unsanitary conditions prevailing in the shanties, Wahab emphasized that these structures often serve as hideouts for criminals and hubs for drug trafficking. He stressed that the demolition would not only enhance public health but also contribute to the safety and security of law-abiding residents in the vicinity.

The operation will involve operatives from the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) and officials from the Monitoring Enforcement and Compliance department of the ministry, with security reinforcement to ensure a smooth execution.

Wahab urged occupants to evacuate the premises promptly, emphasizing the importance of their cooperation for the success of the exercise. He underscored that this initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to maintaining law and order and fostering a conducive environment for all residents.

This demolition follows a recent similar exercise conducted in Ikoyi, where authorities discovered an apartment renting for N250,000 annually under the Dolphin Estate Bridge. Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotosho, disclosed that out of the 450 squatters arrested during the operation, 371 had requested relocation to their respective states.
