Lagos Mosque Closed Amid Leadership Dispute
The Hausa Community Central Mosque in Agege, Lagos, has remained shut since Saturday due to an ongoing leadership conflict. The closure, enforced by the Agege Local Government under Chairman Ganiyu Kola Egunjobi, follows a dispute over the succession of the mosque’s late Chief Imam, Sheikh Sharif Habib Abdul-Majid, who passed away last Wednesday…READ MORE…
A viral video reportedly captured worshippers engaged in a physical altercation inside the mosque, highlighting tensions between three rival factions: supporters of the late imam’s family, backers of the Na’ib (second-in-command) seeking to assume leadership, and members of the Sarkin Hausawan Agege Council advocating for their candidate.
Tensions peaked during Friday prayers when the Na’ib attempted to deliver the sermon but was blocked, leading to disruptions. Sheikh Mahmud Shafi’i confirmed that the incident further fueled divisions within the community.
The General Secretary of the Council of Sarkin Hausawan Agege, Alhaji Abubakar Ali Na’ibi, insisted that the Sarkin Hausawa of Agege is responsible for overseeing the mosque’s affairs. Meanwhile, Sheikh Mustapha Imam Danlami, who served as the late chief imam’s deputy, claims he is the rightful successor.
Shaikh Sharif Ismail Habib Abdul-Majid, the late imam’s son, declined to comment, citing his mourning period.
Agege Council Chairman Egunjobi emphasized that the mosque’s closure was necessary to prevent further conflict. He announced plans to mediate between the disputing parties to reach a peaceful resolution.
