Afenifere Urges FG To Arm Amotekun With Lethal Weapons

In a statement released on Tuesday, January 28, after a meeting in Akure, the hometown of its national leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, Afenifere expressed concern over the increasing activities of bandits.

According to the group’s National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, allowing Amotekun to bear arms would serve as a preparatory step toward establishing state police.

“Afenifere advocates for the licensing of Amotekun in Yoruba-speaking states to carry lethal weapons in anticipation of state policing. We also urge stronger collaboration between Amotekun and other security agencies,” the statement read.

The group further suggested setting up Command and Control posts across local government areas to enhance real-time information sharing, similar to security models in both developed and developing countries.

Additionally, Afenifere urged state and local governments to provide essential resources to farmers—potentially at subsidized rates—to tackle the rising cost of food, boost agricultural productivity, and strengthen the local economy.
