LASU Halts All Academic Activities, Orders Students Out of Hostels Amid Staff-Government Deadlock
The Lagos State University (LASU) has announced an indefinite suspension of all academic and non-academic activities, including the ongoing 2024/2025 second semester examinations, due to unresolved issues between the university’s staff unions and the Lagos State Government.
According to IReporter Online, the decision was made during a virtual Senate meeting held on Saturday, August 2, where members deliberated on the impact of an industrial action declared by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) comprising ASUU, NASU, SSANU, and NAAT.
The Senate was briefed by the Vice-Chancellor and Senate Chairperson, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, who stated that the university administration had engaged in high-level dialogue with relevant authorities in a bid to resolve the impasse. A meeting chaired by the Lagos State Head of Service, Mr. Olabode Agoro, reportedly took place on Friday, August 1, involving union representatives, university management, and state ministry officials. The parties are expected to reconvene on Thursday, August 7, for further consultations.
In the interim, the Senate resolved to postpone all examinations originally scheduled to commence on Monday, August 4, and directed students to vacate their hostels across all campuses—including Ojo, LASUCOM, Epe, and Badagry—by 6:00 a.m. on the same day.
In an official statement, the university urged students and members of the community to remain calm and law-abiding as dialogue continues.
