Tinubu Commends D’Tigress on Historic Fifth AfroBasket Final Berth
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended heartfelt congratulations to Nigeria’s national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their advancement to the final of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket tournament. According to IReporter Online, the Nigerian team secured their place in the final after a hard-fought 75–68 semi-final victory over Senegal at the Palais des Sports in Treichville, Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
This marks the fifth consecutive AfroBasket final appearance for the reigning African champions, a feat President Tinubu described as a testament to their unwavering discipline, teamwork, and excellence. In a statement issued through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, the President emphasized that the team’s consistent dominance has brought honour to the nation and elevated the global perception of Nigerian athletes.
“I have observed the discipline, focus, and team spirit consistently displayed by D’Tigress throughout this tournament—qualities that have brought honour to our nation and earned respect for our players and coaches worldwide,” Tinubu was quoted as saying.
The President also applauded the team’s qualification for the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup qualifiers, scheduled for March 2026, calling it a proud moment for Nigerian sports.
He further singled out Head Coach Rena Wakama for special recognition, commending her pioneering role as the team’s first female coach and her leadership both on and off the court. Tinubu praised Wakama’s impact, stating that her contributions continue to inspire the team’s rise in global basketball circles.
As the team prepares to contend for what would be their fifth consecutive AfroBasket championship and seventh overall, the President reaffirmed his unwavering support for the players, coaching crew, and the development of sports in Nigeria.
