Legendary Mexico Goalkeeper Ochoa Retires After 22 Years Between The Posts

Mexican football legend Guillermo Ochoa has officially announced his retirement from professional football, bringing an end to an illustrious 22-year career with clubs and the national team.

According to Ireporter Online, the 41-year-old goalkeeper confirmed on Tuesday that he would no longer continue his playing career after representing Mexico and several clubs across different leagues for more than two decades.

Ochoa had earlier revealed that the 2026 FIFA World Cup would be his final tournament, and he has now decided to step away from the sport after an unforgettable journey.

In a farewell message shared on social media, the veteran goalkeeper said he gave everything for his clubs and the Mexican national team throughout his career.

The former Club América star retires as one of Mexico’s most decorated and recognised goalkeepers, having featured in six FIFA World Cup tournaments — a record matched only by football icons Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

Ochoa was Mexico’s first-choice goalkeeper at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, the 2018 tournament in Russia and the 2022 edition in Qatar, where he produced several memorable performances on the global stage.

His professional career began with Club América in 2004 before he moved to Europe in 2011 with French club Ajaccio, becoming the first Mexican-born goalkeeper to play in European football.

Throughout his career, Ochoa also represented clubs including Málaga, Granada, Standard Liège, Salernitana, AVS Futebol and AEL Limassol, while enjoying a three-year return spell with América between 2019 and 2022.

Mexico head coach Javier Aguirre honoured Ochoa with a farewell appearance during the team’s final group match against Czechia at Estadio Azteca. After the match, the goalkeeper shared an emotional moment by kissing the goalposts, embracing teammates and taking a final walk on the pitch.

Ochoa’s career achievements include winning the Mexican league title with Club América, the Belgian Cup with Standard Liège, six CONCACAF Gold Cup trophies with Mexico and a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

The veteran goalkeeper leaves football as one of Mexico’s most celebrated players, remembered for his longevity, World Cup appearances and unforgettable saves on the international stage.
