Leon Balogun Lands New European Club After Completing Surprise Transfer

Former Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun has completed a free transfer to Hungarian champions Győri ETO FC, signing a one-year contract with the club ahead of the new season.

According to reports monitored by Ireporter Online, the veteran centre-back joins the Hungarian side after the expiration of his contract with Cypriot outfit Aris Limassol, where he featured in 22 matches last season, scoring two goals and registering one assist.

Speaking after completing the move, Balogun expressed delight at joining the club, describing Győri ETO as an ambitious project he is eager to be part of.

The 38-year-old said he was excited to contribute to the team’s continued growth, noting that the club had already shown its quality in recent matches. He added that maintaining high standards would be key to building on last season’s achievements and expressed his readiness to offer his experience both on and off the pitch.

Balogun arrives in Hungary with an impressive résumé built over a lengthy career across Europe. He began his professional journey in Germany, representing clubs such as Hannover, Werder Bremen and Mainz before earning a move to the English Premier League with Brighton & Hove Albion.

The Nigerian international also enjoyed two successful spells with Scottish giants Rangers, where he lifted the Scottish Premiership title, the Scottish Cup and the Scottish League Cup during his time at Ibrox.

His arrival is expected to strengthen Győri ETO’s defensive line as the Hungarian champions prepare for another demanding domestic and continental campaign.
