Malami Dismisses Corruption Allegations By Obasanjo

Former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, has refuted allegations of corruption made against him by former President Olusegun Obasanjo……..READ MORE

In his recently published book, Nigeria: Past and Future, Obasanjo accused Malami of being a key figure in fostering corruption during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari. He alleged that Malami played a significant role in enabling corrupt practices and described him as a “devil’s workshop.”

Obasanjo particularly criticized the presidential pardons granted in 2022 to former governors Joshua Dariye (Plateau State) and Jolly Nyame (Taraba State), both convicted of financial crimes. He claimed the decision, influenced by Malami, was tainted by corruption rather than being based on genuine health concerns.

Responding in an exclusive interview with Saturday PUNCH, Malami dismissed the allegations as baseless. He clarified that the pardon process followed legal protocols and was handled by the Committee on Prerogative of Mercy, with his role limited to presenting its recommendations to the Council of State.

Malami also condemned what he called a trend of unsubstantiated corruption allegations against public officials. He emphasized the need for detailed evidence, stating that accusations must specify the amount involved, the individuals involved, and the medium through which any alleged bribe was given.

He concluded that allegations lacking such specifics were unfounded, misleading, and legally untenable.
