Members of the community were observing the “Subhi Prayer” on Wednesday morning, May 15, 2024, when Abubakar set the mosque on fire with petrol and locked it to prevent the worshippers from escaping.

SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the command’s spokesperson, confirmed the arrest, stating that 24 people sustained various burn injuries, and there was a fatality.

The suspect confessed to the crime, claiming that his actions were driven by hostility following a prolonged family dispute over inheritance. He alleged that those who cheated him out of his inheritance were in the mosque at the time.

“Today, 15/05/2024 at about 0520hrs, reports were received of an explosion at a mosque in Gadan Village, Gezawa LGA, Kano State during the ‘Subhi Prayer,’ resulting in injuries,” the statement read.

Upon receiving the report, the Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Usaini Gumel, deployed combined teams from the command, including experts in Explosive Ordnance Disposal Chemical Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) led by CSP Haruna Isma’il, and other crime-scene officers led by Divisional Police Officer CSP Haruna Iliya.

“The scene was cordoned off, and twenty-four victims, including 20 adult males and 4 male children, were taken to Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital in Kano for treatment. Preliminary forensic analysis revealed a suspected petrol explosion, and a full investigation is ongoing.”

Abubakar, aged

38, is currently in police custody. He stated that his actions were a result of prolonged family disagreement over inheritance, targeting those he felt had wronged him.
