Mario Balotelli Explains Why He’s Supporting Ghana At The 2026 World Cup

Former Italy striker Mario Balotelli has declared his support for Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, explaining that his allegiance shifted to the Black Stars after Italy failed to qualify for the tournament.

According to reports, Balotelli expressed his backing for Ghana as the Black Stars prepare for a Round of 32 showdown against Colombia following an impressive group-stage campaign. Ghana began their World Cup journey with a 1-0 victory over Panama before holding England to a goalless draw. Although they suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat to Croatia in their final group game, their four-point tally was enough to secure qualification as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.

Speaking during an appearance on Men in Blazers, the former Italian international explained that his support for Ghana stems from both Italy’s absence from the competition and his Ghanaian heritage.

“There is no Italy, so I support Ghana. Obviously, I’m from Ghana, and I’m proud of Ghana,” Balotelli said.

Born Mario Barwuah in Palermo, Sicily, to Ghanaian parents, Balotelli was raised by the Balotelli family in northern Italy and officially became an Italian citizen in 2008. He went on to enjoy an illustrious international career with Italy, representing the Azzurri at UEFA Euro 2012, the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup and the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

One of the defining moments of his international career came at Euro 2012, where his brace against Germany propelled Italy into the final. He later dedicated the memorable performance to his foster mother, Silvia.

Despite building his football legacy in Italy, Balotelli has consistently embraced his Ghanaian roots. With Italy absent from the 2026 World Cup, the 35-year-old is now hoping the Black Stars can continue their remarkable run in the tournament.

Ghana will take on Colombia in the Round of 32 after the South American side topped Group K ahead of Portugal, DR Congo and Uzbekistan.

Balotelli, who currently plays for UAE club Al-Ittifaq FC, has enjoyed a distinguished club career featuring spells at Inter Milan, AC Milan, Manchester City and Liverpool.
