Minister Umahi Denies Prior Knowledge Of Lagos Independence Bridge Closure

The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has stated that he was not informed prior to the closure of the Independence Bridge in Lagos State, which caused significant traffic congestion on Wednesday.

Umahi clarified that the Federal Government did not authorize the closure, noting that the decision was made independently by the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mrs. Olukorede Kesha. “I am here as directed by Mr. President, who witnessed the discomfort experienced by Lagosians. While the rehabilitation of the bridge is important, I am displeased that I was not informed of the closure beforehand,” Umahi stated.

He further expressed his dissatisfaction with the lack of communication, adding that although the structural issues warrant rehabilitation, the bridge should not have been closed without proper coordination.

Following his assessment, Umahi ordered the reopening of the Independence Bridge to alleviate the ongoing traffic gridlock.
