Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has publicly reprimanded his ministers for falling asleep during cabinet meetings, describing it as a demonstration of poor discipline and a lack of self-control. Hichilema condemned the act of dozing off during official meetings, emphasizing the importance of staying attentive while performing government duties. He remarked, “In cabinet, somebody’s sleeping at 10 hours – the question is where were they… if you can start conking there? To me, that is a crime, a serious crime.”

While the president did not explicitly clarify what he meant by “indulgence,” local media have speculated that his remarks may be linked to late-night socializing and excessive alcohol consumption. Hichilema warned that such behavior not only undermines government efficiency but also poses a threat to national security.

He advised his cabinet members to practice self-discipline and exercise caution, drawing on biblical principles to underline the dangers of reckless behavior. He stated, “When you’re in public office, you must have self-control, not to over-indulge.”

Since assuming office in 2021, following a resounding electoral victory, President Hichilema has made government accountability a cornerstone of his administration. His commitment to high standards has led to the dismissal of several senior officials, including ministers, due to concerns about their performance.

Hichilema also criticized ministers who leak confidential government information on social media, particularly during informal gatherings, labeling such actions as irresponsible. He questioned the commitment of those who sleep during meetings, saying, “How do you participate in a meeting when you are sleeping? It clearly shows you are not invested in cabinet deliberations on behalf of Zambians. Why occupy the seat if you are not interested?
