More Defections Hit NNPP As Abbas Joins APC

In a statement by Ismail Mudashir, Special Adviser to the Deputy President of the Senate on Media and Publicity, Hon. Abbas announced his defection during a visit to Senator Barau Jibrin’s residence in Kano on Friday night.

Over the past six months, the NNPP has experienced a mass exodus of leaders and supporters across Kano’s 44 local government areas. Dubbed the “Barau Tsunami,” the defections have seen thousands of party members abandon their red caps, symbolizing the Kwankwasiyya movement, in favor of the APC.

This political shift follows calls from some NNPP leaders for Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to take firmer control of governance. Last month, the governor responded by dismissing the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Abdullahi Bichi, along with five commissioners, including Hon. Abbas.

During his announcement, Hon. Abbas pledged to support the APC’s efforts in Kano State and beyond, working to ensure the party’s success.

Senator Barau Jibrin, the Deputy President of the Senate and First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, warmly welcomed Hon. Abbas. Joining him at the event were the Kano State APC Chairman, Prince Abdullahi Abbas (Ɗan Sarki, Jikan Sarki), and other party leaders.

Senator Barau assured Hon. Abbas of the APC’s commitment to fostering good governance, inclusivity, and service to Nigerians. He emphasized that the APC is a broad platform ready to accommodate all those who share its vision for a better future.
