The event, held at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (GEJ) Golf Club, was part of activities honoring Nigeria’s fallen heroes, veterans of World Wars I and II, and the Nigerian Civil War. Armed Forces Remembrance Day is observed annually on January 15.
Over 200 golfers participated in the tournament, which was graced by top military officials, including the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa. Represented by the Chief of Defence Intelligence, Maj. Gen. EAP Undiandeye, Musa emphasized the significance of the event in honoring those who sacrificed their lives for Nigeria’s peace and unity.
“This tournament is part of the activities commemorating Armed Forces Remembrance Day. It also strengthens the partnership between the military and the NGF, promoting health and fitness through golf,” he said. Musa expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for supporting the military’s operations and reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ commitment to restoring peace and security across Nigeria.
NGF President Otunba Olusegun Runsewe commended the federal government for providing a befitting recognition to fallen heroes. He highlighted the importance of appreciating those who contributed to Nigeria’s unity and expressed gratitude to the CDS for fostering collaboration with the NGF.
Runsewe remarked, “This event is a testament to the military’s culture of honoring their own, living or dead. It serves as an example for future generations to remember those who have served this great country.”
Air Vice Marshal (AVM) B.D. Solomon, Captain of the GEJ Golf Club and Vice President of NGF, revealed that the tournament was initiated two years ago to bring together retired and serving military personnel in a spirit of camaraderie.
“The game of golf has the unique ability to unite people, especially during significant events like this, where we honor our fallen heroes,” Solomon said.
The Chairman of the tournament’s organizing committee, AVM Dalhat Ladan, praised the successful execution of the event, describing it as a testament to dedication and teamwork.
“The tournament has been a wonderful experience, bringing joy and camaraderie to all participants. It is a fitting tribute to our heroes,” Ladan said.
