Moses Itauma, Hrgović Set For Explosive Clash For Vacant IBF Heavyweight Title

British-Nigerian heavyweight prospect Moses Itauma is set to face Croatian contender Filip Hrgović for the vacant IBF heavyweight world title at London’s O2 Arena on Saturday night, August 29.

According to Ireporter Online, Itauma enters the highly anticipated contest unbeaten after 14 professional fights, recording 12 victories by knockout. The 21-year-old arrives in impressive form following a stunning first-round stoppage of former world title challenger Dillian Whyte in his previous outing.

Born in Slovakia to a Nigerian father and Slovak mother, Itauma moved to Kent during his childhood and has quickly established himself as one of the most exciting young talents in the heavyweight division.

Victory over Hrgović could see Itauma make boxing history by becoming the second-youngest heavyweight world champion ever, behind legendary American boxer Mike Tyson, who won his first world title at the age of 20. He would also become the youngest active world champion in the sport.

Tensions have continued to rise ahead of the bout, with Hrgović repeatedly referring to Itauma as a “kid” while questioning the level of experience possessed by the unbeaten challenger.

Itauma has admitted that some of the Croatian’s comments have irritated him, particularly Hrgović’s remarks about his lifestyle and preparation.

The Croatian heavyweight has also attempted to unsettle his younger opponent by leaving him out of his personal ranking of the division’s top five fighters. Hrgović named Oleksandr Usyk, Daniel Dubois, Agit Kabayel, himself and Tyson Fury as his leading heavyweights.

Hrgović, 34, enters the contest with a professional record of 20 wins, one defeat and 15 knockouts. The former 2016 Rio Olympic bronze medallist believes his greater experience could prove decisive against the highly rated Itauma.

The Croatian has acknowledged Itauma’s talent, power and speed but remains confident that he can defeat the young prospect in what he considers the biggest fight of his career.

The vacant IBF title became available after Oleksandr Usyk relinquished the championship, while Frank Sanchez agreed to step aside, allowing Itauma to enter the world-title picture earlier than many expected.

Despite the significance of the championship belt, Itauma insists his motivation remains focused on defeating Hrgović. The young heavyweight says becoming world champion would be an honour, but his immediate priority is securing victory over his Croatian opponent.
