NACA: 2023 Sees 15,000 Children Die From AIDS Complications

Dr. Ilori emphasized the importance of preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV and reiterated the nation’s commitment to eliminating AIDS by 2030. Despite alarming statistics, significant progress has been made in some states like Sokoto and Gombe, which reported breakthroughs in suppressing viral loads and eliminating mother-to-child transmission.
Stakeholders, including NEPWHAN and other health organizations, continue to advocate for policy changes, sustainable funding, and innovative healthcare strategies to protect vulnerable populations, especially children.
Dr. Ilori also called for an end to the stigma associated with HIV, urging people living with the virus to access care and adhere to their treatment plans. Efforts to improve accessibility to HIV testing and treatment across the country were highlighted as critical steps toward eradicating the epidemic.
Progress in Sokoto and Gombe:
- Sokoto State has achieved zero mother-to-child transmissions for the past year.
- Gombe State reported a 96% viral suppression rate among HIV patients.
Governor’s Call to Action:
Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts, increased funding, and awareness to reach zero new HIV infections by 2030.
