This revelation comes as part of NAPTIP’s efforts to combat harmful practices and protect the rights of women and girls in Nigeria.
Responding to inquiries from the public, particularly regarding the circumcision of newborn baby girls, NAPTIP clarified that such practices are illegal and punishable under the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act (VAPP) of 2015, as well as various state VAPP laws. The agency emphasized that anyone found guilty of performing female circumcision could face imprisonment of up to four years, while attempted circumcision carries a penalty of two years behind bars.
Furthermore, NAPTIP underscored that individuals who incite, aid, or counsel others to commit the offense of female circumcision are also liable for prosecution, with a potential punishment of up to two years imprisonment.
In debunking misconceptions about the practice, particularly the notion that it prevents promiscuity in women, NAPTIP urged the public to recognize female circumcision, also known as genital mutilation, as a serious crime with severe legal consequences. The agency emphasized the importance of education and awareness-raising to eliminate harmful practices and promote the well-being of women and girls across Nigeria.
This announcement reflects NAPTIP’s ongoing commitment to safeguarding the rights and dignity of women and girls, and underscores the government’s stance against harmful cultural practices that jeopardize their health and well-being.
