Niger Calls On Nigerian Diplomat Over Alleged Destabilization Scheme

Tensions have been high between Nigeria and Niger since the military took control in Niamey in 2023 and withdrew from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria, who leads the ECOWAS bloc, had briefly considered a regional military intervention to restore ousted President Mohamed Bazoum.

However, relations improved in August when security cooperation between Abuja and Niamey resumed after being suspended post-coup.

Despite these efforts, recent accusations have strained relations once more, resulting in the summoning of the Nigerian diplomat on Wednesday. Nigerien Foreign Minister Bakary Yaou Sangare stated, “Despite attempts to normalize relations, we regret that Nigeria has not abandoned its role as a base for the destabilization of Niger, with the complicity of certain foreign powers and officials of the former regime, who are being offered refuge.”

In late August, Nigeria’s highest military official agreed during a meeting with Niger’s army chief not to destabilize Niger or its neighboring countries.

Additionally, Niger’s military government has confirmed its willingness to actively participate in security cooperation through the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJT). This task force, which includes Nigeria, Niger, Cameroon, and Chad, plays a crucial role in combating jihadist groups operating along the borders of the four nations.

Niger is currently engaged in fighting jihadists affiliated with the Islamic State, Al-Qaeda, and Boko Haram in regions such as western Tillaberi and southeastern Diffa, adjacent to Nigeria. Following the 2023 coup, Niger has sought to strengthen its ties with neighboring countries like Mali and Burkina Faso, both governed by military regimes, forming a strategic alliance known as the Alliance of Sahel States.
