During her speech at the 2024 National TB Conference in Abuja, she expressed concern over the high incidence of TB in Nigeria, as reflected in the reported cases for 2023.
She emphasized the need for intensified action against TB, stating, “Nigeria continues to bear the heaviest TB burden in Africa, ranking sixth globally.” The 2024 WHO Global Tuberculosis Report indicates that approximately 467,000 TB cases were reported in Nigeria in 2023, highlighting the urgent need for a collective response.
Mrs. Tinubu praised the ongoing initiatives by partners in the fight against TB but underscored the necessity for more vigorous efforts. She acknowledged the progress achieved in diagnosing and treating TB, attributing it to the commitment of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, as well as to contributions from civil society organizations and international partners like USAID and the Global Fund.
“The key to eradicating TB lies in the strength of our public and private partnerships and the integrated delivery of services that ensure no one is left behind,” the First Lady remarked. She reiterated her commitment to the cause of eradicating tuberculosis, emphasizing the importance of the conference as a platform for knowledge sharing, strategy formulation, and renewed dedication to combating TB.
