for Insurance, Olusegun Omosehin, underscored the potential of such collaborations to drive transformative growth.

Omosehin highlighted Malaysia’s remarkable success in Takaful insurance, an Islamic insurance model, as a prime example for Nigeria to emulate. Over the past three decades, Malaysia has established itself as a global leader in this niche, making it a valuable benchmark for Nigeria’s aspirations.

“We must learn from nations like Malaysia that share similar market dynamics,” Omosehin said. “By adopting proven strategies and tailoring them to our unique environment, we can unlock Nigeria’s immense insurance potential.”

Omosehin linked NAICOM’s vision to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ambitious goal of achieving a $1 trillion economy within eight years. With Nigeria’s insurance penetration still relatively low, the sector offers significant opportunities for growth and investment.

He noted Nigeria’s progress in the Takaful insurance space, expanding from a single company in 2013 to six firms currently regulated by the commission. Strategic partnerships and knowledge sharing, he explained, would accelerate this growth and benefit both policyholders and the broader economy.

A Boost from Legislation

The commissioner also informed the High Commissioner of the recently passed insurance bill awaiting concurrence in the House of Representatives. This legislation promises to attract substantial capital inflows and open new avenues for investment in the insurance sector.

As NAICOM sets its sights on transforming Nigeria’s insurance landscape, industry stakeholders are optimistic. By leveraging Malaysia’s expertise and fostering international collaboration, the commission is poised to deliver a more robust, inclusive, and innovative insurance ecosystem.
