NFF Urges Urgent Repairs

A Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) official confirmed that discussions have been held with the Akwa Ibom State government regarding the urgent need for pitch rehabilitation. The stadium, Nigeria’s only FIFA/CAF-approved venue for international matches, serves as the home ground for the Super Eagles and NPFL club Akwa United, as well as hosting continental fixtures for Rivers United, Enugu Rangers, and Enyimba.

“We understand that a committee is responsible for maintaining the stadium. They need to assess the pitch and address problem areas before the situation worsens,” an NFF source told The Guardian. The official suggested consulting local experts in grass pitch maintenance to restore the field.

State Government Responds

In reaction to the concerns, Akwa Ibom State Football Association Chairman, Samuel Umoh, assured that maintenance work is already underway.

He explained, “We initially considered restricting Enyimba from using the stadium to avoid disrupting repairs, but given their lack of alternatives, we had to allow it. The same challenge applies to Akwa United, as they also rely on the facility.”

While the state government considered temporarily closing the stadium for full-scale renovations, they ultimately decided to keep it operational to accommodate the ongoing football season.
