Nigerian Navy Launches ‘Exercise Swift Response’ With 7 Ships And 2 Helicopters For Rescue Operations

In a proactive move to enhance maritime safety and rescue capabilities, the Nigerian Navy announced the deployment of seven ships and two helicopters for a comprehensive operation dubbed ‘Exercise Swift Response’. The deployment encompasses a range of naval assets, including patrol vessels from the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), aimed at bolstering maritime search and rescue services across Nigeria’s territorial waters. Rear Adm. Hassan emphasized that the exercise aims to minimize the loss of lives and properties by swiftly responding to maritime accidents.

“This exercise involves the deployment of suitable naval assets, equipped for maritime disaster management operations. It is geared towards ensuring the safety of lives at sea within Nigeria’s maritime domain and the Gulf of Guinea,” Rear Adm. Hassan explained.

He further highlighted that ‘Exercise Swift Response’ serves as an opportunity to assess the disaster management capabilities of the Western Naval Command and align with the Chief of Naval Staff’s vision for enhancing operational readiness.

One of the key aspects of the exercise involves training personnel in advanced tactics, including the triangulation and interception of rogue vessels at sea. Additionally, the operation will facilitate the evaluation of communication systems and coordination mechanisms among naval vessels for efficient information sharing and coordination during rescue missions.

“The exercise will afford ships in the western fleet the opportunity to reevaluate their information sharing capabilities through effective communication and also test their capabilities for carrying out rescue missions at sea. It will also equally assess the capabilities of the Nigerian Navy in surveillance and special air operations, among others,” Rear Adm. Hassan added.

With ‘Exercise Swift Response’, the Nigerian Navy demonstrates its unwavering commitment to safeguarding maritime activities, ensuring the safety of seafarers, and fortifying its readiness to respond swiftly and effectively to maritime emergencies.
