Nigerian Nurse Leaves US Job For Personal Fulfillment, Emphasizing That Money Isn’t Everything

Judith Okoli, a Nigerian nurse, has garnered attention after resigning from her nursing position in the United States to return to Nigeria. While many individuals pursue opportunities abroad, Okoli’s choice has ignited significant discussions.

In an online video, she addressed the numerous inquiries about her decision. Speaking in Pidgin English, she remarked, “Everyone keeps asking, ‘Why did you leave America? Are you okay? Do you want to suffer in Nigeria?’”

However, she emphasized, “I hope you understand that money is not everything—at least for some people, including me.”

Elaborating on her reasoning, Okoli clarified that her decision was not made lightly, but rather through deep contemplation.

She shared her realization that financial achievements do not necessarily guarantee happiness or a fulfilling life. “Someone may earn N100 yet feel miserable—disrespected at work, restless, and disconnected from life. In contrast, another individual earning just N50 might be content, spend meaningful time with family, sleep soundly, and experience peace of mind. For me, it’s about the quality of life,” she stated.

Okoli expressed her concern regarding how the relentless pursuit of wealth in Western societies often results in a disconnection from what truly matters—relationships, peace, and overall contentment. “Look at the impact of the Western lifestyle on us,” she commented.

“Families are fragmented. One child is in Germany, another in Canada, and yet another in Dubai. Six siblings haven’t seen each other in three years—all in the quest for a better life, while neglecting the essence of a quality life,” she added.
