Nigerians React As Aisha-Yesufu Opposes Quota-System For Super Eagles (Details)

A social critic, Aisha Yesufu, has tackled those advocating for the introduction of a quota system in the Super Eagles, Nigeria’s national football team.

Yesufu argued that the North should invest more in nurturing young talent, noting that many potential football stars are currently roaming the streets as Almajiris. Her comments came in response to a report by a football enthusiast, Kabiru Yakasai, who questioned the inclusion of only one player from the North in the current Super Eagles squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic.

Yakasai contended that given the North’s significant contributions to Nigerian football, more players from the region deserved spots on the senior national team. He criticized Super Eagles coach, Finidi George, for overlooking the traditional mix of players from both the South and North, which he argued undermines the team’s historical culture of unity and inclusivity. Yakasai expressed concerns that Finidi’s selection approach could affect the team’s cohesion and Nigeria’s football identity.

In contrast, Yesufu, in a post on her X handle on Wednesday, stated her disagreement with Yakasai’s views. She emphasized that introducing a quota system, which she believes has already negatively impacted Nigeria, into football would be detrimental. Yesufu’s stance is that focusing on talent development, rather than enforced regional representation, is key to the national team’s success.

She said:
“I agree! The North should invest more in children. Many Ronaldos and Messis are roaming the streets as Almajiris. Those talents, if nurtured, can end up making up even 90% of the national squad. You want to bring in quota system that has destroyed Nigeria into the one thing that currently unites Nigeria!”
