Nigeria’s Envoy Jimoh Ibrahim Bags New UN Role

Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Jimoh Ibrahim, has been elected Chairman of the Budget and Administration Committee of the United Nations General Assembly’s Fifth Committee, placing him at the forefront of the organisation’s financial and administrative oversight during a period of significant fiscal pressure.

His emergence comes as the United Nations grapples with a reported budget deficit exceeding $1.8 billion, largely attributed to reductions in foreign aid contributions and other financial constraints affecting the global body.

Speaking after his election on Tuesday, Ibrahim stressed the need for innovative and strategic measures to address the organisation’s growing financial challenges. He noted that the current global climate demands effective management of deficit financing amid multiple economic and geopolitical pressures that continue to strain revenue generation.

According to reports, Ibrahim emphasized that rising global tensions and complex financial realities require urgent, critical and forward-thinking solutions capable of creating opportunities within a challenging environment.

The Nigerian diplomat stated that he would leverage his experience as a former member of the Senate Committee on Budget and Appropriation, as well as his previous role as Chairman of Inter-Parliamentary Relations, to foster consensus and strengthen cooperation among member states.

He also referenced the economic reform policies championed by President Bola Tinubu, expressing confidence that lessons drawn from those reforms would influence his approach to budget administration, appropriations and human resource management within the United Nations system.

Ibrahim expressed gratitude to member states and the United Nations for the confidence reposed in him, pledging to provide strategic leadership, sound corporate governance and effective stewardship in the discharge of his new responsibilities.
