State Assembly Clerk Suspended By Abia Government
The Abia State Government has suspended the Clerk of the State House of Assembly, John Pedro Irokansi, over allegations of misconduct, according to official directives issued by the state authorities.
The suspension was communicated through a letter dated May 29, 2026, and signed by the Head of Service, Benson Ojeikere. In the wake of the development, the government announced the appointment of Promise Onwukwe, a Deputy Director in the Legislative Department of the Abia State House of Assembly, as Acting Clerk with immediate effect.
While the specific allegations against Irokansi were not disclosed, the government indicated that the appointment of an Acting Clerk was necessary to ensure the smooth administration of the office while investigations into the matter continue.
The directive mandates Onwukwe to oversee the operations of the Clerk’s office pending the outcome of the ongoing probe or until further instructions are issued by the appropriate authorities. He was also charged with safeguarding all government assets, official records, and documents under the custody of the office in accordance with established regulations.
Irokansi is regarded as one of the longest-serving officials within the state legislature, having held the position of Clerk for approximately 16 years. During his tenure, he served under three successive administrations in Abia State.
